Depending how closely you feel related to a rabbit this may or may not strike a chord with you!
As reported in the
Journal of Neuroinflammation, high levels of caffeine, ingested over a long period of time, can have an effect on the integrity blood brain barrier.
The blood brain barrier is vital in protecting the brain from circulating blood, this may seem slightly backwards as all cells require oxygen and nutrients carried in the blood to function. However, some blood borne chemicals are actually poisonous to brain cells and so the blood vessels are structured differently - with very tightly packed cells so as to only allow lipid soluble nutrients & chemicals to pass through via diffusion (Oxygen, Glucose etc).
Do you drink Coffee or Tea on a regular basis? Don't you get confused by all the health warnings/benefits that keep on being announced? One minute too much caffeine is bad for you, may cause cancer or, now, may protect your brain.
What do you think? Do these studies using model organisms like rabbits and mice really have much bearing on the effect on humans? HYS
